Attic Insulation Los Angeles

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 50 to 70 percent of the energy used in homes is for heating or cooling activities. With time, the insulation in your home will need to be replaced. Insulation can lose efficiency with age due to flattening, or by pests damaging the insulation material if they happen to enter your attic. By properly insulating your home, you can create a more comfortable and consistent indoor climate while significantly improving your home's energy efficiency. If you are in need of replacing your attic insulation to improve the energy efficiency of your home call us today for a free estimate. We can help you determine the best attic insulation material that will fit the needs of your home. Furthermore, for qualifying LADWP customers there are rebates available for installing attic insulation. Call us to see what rebates may be available to you.

Attic Insulation

The effectiveness and efficiency of attic insulation is determined by the R-value, where the "R" stands for Resistance. The higher the insulation's R-value is the higher its efficiency and performance will be. Some homes will have some type of existing attic insulation already in their attic. Unless, existing insulation has been damaged by pests, if there is any existing insulation it is customary to add more insulation to bring the R-value up higher. Attic insulation is a great investment and usually pays for itself through savings within a year.  It can be one of the best investments you will make to your home.
Proper insulation of your home is important in keeping your home comfortable and helps keep your energy bills low. Although the cost may be high, the savings will far outweigh the initial cost of installation. We install either cellulose or fiberglass insulation. Cellulose attic insulation is blown in. For the fiberglass option it can be blown in or comes in batts.

Insulation Removal

Homeowners often wonder if removing or vacuuming the existing attic insulation is necessary. We recommend removing old insulation if it has been damaged by fire, water or is heavily infested by rodents.  We can actually save you money on attic insulation by using your existing insulation as a base. We can just add more insulation to the existing one to bring your attic up to a higher R- rating. The existing insulation may look in poor condition, but it's just old. Mixing insulation materials doesn't pose any problems or cause any chemical interactions. If insulation removal is required, we remove the fiberglass rolls by hand and pack them in bags. If the attic has any blown-in material, we use a large vacuum to remove all the material. The vacuum is usually outside the house which ensures a clean job where little or no debris enters the home.

Seal Air Leaks

Air sealing any leaks in your attic can provide substantial benefits. Especially, if you would like to improve the energy efficiency of an older house, one of the first steps you can take is to seal attic air leaks. We do this by using foam throughout the attic where there are any holes such as around recessed lights, plumbing, piping, conduit or any areas where air can get through. Sealing attic air leaks is easiest to do when attic is empty.  This process is more beneficial when using fiberglass insulation but homes with cellulose insulation can also benefit.

Ducting Replacement

Your ductwork system is an essential component of your HVAC system. It’s a network of connections that delivers heated or cooled air to all the rooms in your home. The duct system often will last a long time before you need to modify or replace the system. However, duct problems can lead to a less efficient system causing higher electricity bills. Ductwork problems can also lead to poor indoor air quality decreasing your overall comfort. The following are the most common signs of ductwork issues and may need duct replacement. Replacing or repairing your ductwork does have its advantages. Once your ducts are working properly, they will no longer be working as hard to cool and heat your home. This will lead to less wasted energy causing increased energy efficiency and lower electric bills. New ducts also lead to less allergens and odors polluting the indoor air of your home. Replacing or repairing your ducts also means improved airflow and therefore an increase in temperature regulation. This all leads to an an overall healthiersystem.

Attic Fan Installation

On a hot summer day the AC in your southern California home does a decent job of cooling down your home, but may have to constantly run to keep up. By installing an attic fan, some of the pressure can be taken off your AC and you can enjoy a comfortable home. An attic fan can reduce temperatures in the living area, reduce energy costs and extend the life of your home’s roofing, framing and insulation materials. An attic fan can also improves air circulation to prevent mold and mildew growth and prevents structural damage from condensation. The truth is that heat built up in your attic can seep down into the rest of your home and put undue pressure on your HVAC system and your energy bill. Call us today to see how we can help you reduce your overall home energy bills by installing an attic fan.

Light Fixture Retrofitting

Recessed lights cannot have insulation batts covering them. However, leaving them uncovered leads to significant air flow between the conditioned space and attic. To seal these air leaks around the lighting, we cover the recessed light in your attic and seal with foam insulation. Sealing with foam is a safe, effective way to eliminate the significant air flow between the spaces. Essentially this leads to a more comfortable home and lower utility costs as well.

Cellulose Insulation

Cellulose is only available as a loose-fill (blown) material. Cellulose is also environmentally friendly as it made almost entirely from recycled products such as newspaper, or other wood related product. We consider it the most effective, efficient, longest-lasting and safest material you can use. Cellulose insulation has soundproofing qualities is permanently non-flammable and resistant to rodents, insects and mold. Best of all, cellulose is non-toxic and safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does attic insulation work?

The attic is by far the most important area of your home to have insulated. Attic insulation is installed at the bottom of the attic which is the ceiling of your home. Attic insulation can help you save money on energy bills both during the summer and during the winter. During summer it can help reduce heat coming into the home and during the winter it can help keep heat in your home. A properly insulated home also means that the air conditioning and furnace system will cycle less often leading to saving money on energy bills. Learn more about HVAC maintenance here to further save money on energy bills.

How much insulation do I need?

In Los Angeles and surrounding counties the the standard building code for attic insulation is R-38. If you have existing insulation, in order to determine how much insulation you need you will need to measure the depth of your current insulation. In order to achieve R-38 the minimum thickness is12 inches. If your current insulation is only 3 inches deep, you will need to add 9 inches of insulation to achieve the 12-inch R-38 rating. Also keep in mind the following to achieve R-38:

  • If your attic has little to no existing insulation, you will need to install R-38 rated material
  • If your attic has 2-3″ of existing insulation, you will need to install R-30 material to reach R-38
  • If your attic has 5-6″ of existing insulation, you will need to install R-19 material to reach R-38
