Top Causes of HVAC Airflow Issues

hvac airflow issues

At LA Construction Heating and Air one of the most common calls we receive is regarding HVAC airflow issues. If you suspect you have airflow issues, you may be experiencing hot and cold spots in your home, ac system blowing warm air or no air at all. Sometimes airflow issues can even lead to compressor failure or complete system failure. Address any issues right away so it does not cause any unnecessary strain on your system. Take the time to properly maintain your HVAC system to prolong the life of your unit and save you money in the long run. There are many causes of HVAC airflow issues in your home and most can be fixed inexpensively. Below are the top causes of HVAC airflow issues.

Dirty Or Clogged Filters

Dirty, old or clogged air filters are one of the top causes for HVAC airflow issues. Air filters are responsible for keeping dust and debris from your home and out of your equipment and duct system. A clogged or dirty air filter can hinder air flow and can cause damage to your equipment. Be sure to change the air filter according to the manufacturer’s specifications or at the very least at least once every 3 months. Also keep in mind that the higher the MERV rating a filter has, the smaller the pores which can also reduce airflow. Make sure you follow manufacturer specifications and your system can handle high MERV filters.

Issues With Vents and Registers

One simple solution to increase airflow into your home is to make sure all vents and registers are open and unobstructed. An improperly sized return vent can also lead to airflow issues. If it is not the correct size, it may be inadequate to provide enough air for the system to properly function. Furthermore, if dampers are closed it can lead to airflow issues and cause system to run inefficiently.

Low Refrigerant Levels

If your system has not been well maintained especially if you have an older system you may be suffering from airflow issues and reduced cooling due to low refrigerant levels. A slow refrigerant leak will cause a gradual decline in system performance. Contact a professional who can test for leak and repair a leak to get your system working properly.

Obstructed Condenser Unit

One common problem that can lead to HVAC airflow issues is an obstructed condenser unit. Outdoor condenser units can easily become obstructed with leaves and debris that have accumulated around the unit. An obstructed condenser unit with dirty coils can overheat if there’s not enough airflow. The coils can get so dirty that the system will work harder to release heat and cool your home. That is one reason to not neglect regular maintenance of your system at least twice a year. Be sure to always keep the area around your outdoor unit free from debris.

Oversized AC Unit

An oversized ac unit can lead to airflow issues as well. An oversized ac unit will run inefficiently and cycle on and off frequently. This can lead to a space that is uncomfortable. Have your HVAC system checked by an HVAC professional who can determine if your HVAC unit is improperly sized for your space.

Ductwork Issues

If the ductwork is installed in a way that restricts airflow then the space may never receive the air it was designed to get. If the home’s ductwork is not right, it can result in uneven cooling and heating and lower efficiency. Each duct run should be installed in a way that it will deliver the right amount of air to a space. Furthermore, ductwork can also develop holes where air can leak out. These ductwork issues can lead to hvac airflow issues.

AC Blower Issues

The blower fan is responsible for moving the air through the ductwork and throughout the space. If an ac blower is not working properly then it can impede HVAC airflow and lead to airflow issues.

How to Improve Airflow

You can lower the probability of HVAC airflow issues by keeping your HVAC system on a regular maintenance schedule. Some things your HVAC technician can take care of to improve HVAC airflow is replace air filters, clean condenser coils, inspect motors, fan blades, and ductwork. If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms its best to call a professional and schedule maintenance for your system. You don’t have to suffer from HVAC airflow issues, call us today at (818) 341-3406 to see how we can help or to schedule regular maintenance.
